One of the many News story, These Fags do!

Serial Killer Arthur Shawcross Dead: An Unlikely Impetus Into the Bizarre World Of Murderabilia
    By Andy Kahan

Serial Killer Arthur Shawcross who was serving life in prison for strangling 11 women in upstate New York died this week. Shawcross's gruesome criminal history included cannibalism and mutilation as well as necrophilia. Shawcross committed all these murders while out on parole for killing two young children in 1972 for which he served about half of his 25 year sentence.

I grew up in upstate New York and in the fall of 1999 while perusing through a local newspaper I read about Shawcross's art privileges being rescinded because prison officials discovered he had artwork for sale on Ebay. Needless to say I was flabbergasted, stunned and any other adjective you could conjure up. I, like most rationale people was under the delusion that inmates could not profit off their notoriety they achieved by committing some of the most despicable crimes known to mankind.

I figured if one serial killer had items up for bid perhaps there was others and thus began the quest to eradicate and legislate 'Murderabilia'. I contacted an Ebay official who much to his chagrin got to know me real well for the next two years and asked about the legalities of allowing third parties to sell personalized items from convicted murderers. I was advised that Ebay was not the morality police and if I didn't like it, feel free to do something about it. I accepted their challenge and the gauntlet was thrown.

Arthur Shawcross and his brethren didn't have an inkling as to what I was about to embark in.

For the next several years I became an active buyer and became so well known I would even get advance notices from dealers of pending items. I was of the opinion that it's nice to print out items being sold but it's even better to actually have them in my possession. Trust me, when I show elected officials strands of hair from a serial killer or fingernail clippings it gets their attention.

I then decided it was time to 'Out' this macabre burgeoning industry by utilizing the most powerful weapon in this country i.e. the MEDIA. Every week I would send out an email to a local newspaper tipping them off to one of their local serial killers peddling tangible goods on Ebay. I would literally look at my watch and count down the seconds before I would receive a call from a reporter and the next day headlines would blare out "Danny Rolling, Gainesville Ripper Items For Sale on Ebay". Naturally, my so-called dealer buddies were none to happy and some of them even had the audacity to ban me from buying their items.

ABC'S 20/20 caught wind of my campaign and agreed to showcase a segment on the 'Murderabilia' industry. Timing was great because I initiated legislation via my friend and fellow victim advocate Mark Klaas in California and Texas would soon follow. The legislation was known as The Notoriety For Profit Law which is now in effect in six other states. Funny thing happened on road to murderabilia: Two weeks before 20/20 was scheduled to air their segment, Ebay sent out a news release stating "They will no longer allow the sale of murderabilia, out of respect for victims families". Timing of their announcement had nothing to do with the 20/20 piece---Maybe I am a bit cynical but wow what a coincidence after dragging them through the mud for two years and all of sudden a national segment where they might not be shown in the most positive light they shut it down. Nah--I must be out of my mind.

Well, what happened next pretty much brings us to where we are today with respect to the 'Murderabilia" industry. The most accurate way to describe what happened is to cite the analogy of 'Well, when you exterminate cockroaches from one room, they simply set up shop somewhere else'. Most of the 'reputable' dealers simply designed their own 'Murderabilia' web-sites and some began their own auction based 'business'.

Today 'Murderabilia' dealers ply their wares under acronyms such as MurderAuction, PrisonBoundSerialKiller, Daisy Seven, Supernaught and Death Row Collectables. Recent items posted for sale include the infamous murderer John Couey's drawings and letters. Couey, you might recall buried little Jessica Lunsford ALIVE.

Federal Legislation has been filed by Texas Senator John Cornyn. The bill is SB 1528 and is known as The Anti-Murderabilia Crime Victim Dignity Act. I am hopeful we can secure a Democrat co-sponsor which is vital to get this bill moving. I would appreciate any suggestions or if you happen to know a good Democrat Senator let him or her know we need their help to once and for all eradicate this insidious despicable industry.

This posting is dedicated to all the victims and surviving family members of Arthur Shawcross: May they have some semblance of peace realizing that they have played a pivotal role in exposing the 'Murderabilia' industry.

Next month I will share with you what some of America's most notorious killers have to say about the 'Murderabilia' industry including probably one of the most bizarre unlikely alliances I have ever developed.

Another killer takes a shot at selling her stuff

    Abigail Goldman
    Las Vegas Sun

    Sep 17, 2008

Brookey Lee West stuffed her dead mother into a garbage can and left her in a Las Vegas storage unit until the remains were discovered by someone who couldn’t stand the smell. West denied she’d killed her mom, but a jury didn’t buy it: She’s serving life for murder.

So, want to buy Brookey’s fingernail clippings?

West has joined the creepy canon of killers who are collectible. Convicted felons whose personal belongings — their art, their letters, their photographs, their fingernail clippings — are hoarded by fans who fawn at the feet of death row’s pop stars. This is the murderabilia industry.

    The clippings from West’s right

hand are being sold for $19.99 (free shipping worldwide!) on a sitethat also sells West’s artwork:prisonboundserialkillers.com. The site’s owner, a guy named Randall from Massachusetts, urges his customers to “go ahead and try to find a better deal.” He also reminds them to “stay evil 24/7.”

Randall started selling West’s stuff about eight months ago and is one of the first collectors to introduce her to the niche murderabilia market. He says he’s sold a drawing of Jesus by West for $175. He says he has had a few inquiries about the fingernails, but no takers. Like most dealers, he gets his merchandise through correspondence with the killer. Some people ask for products point-blank, but Randall never said a word to West — he figured she knew what he was after anyway. She sent him her clippings unsolicited.

She also sent a painting of three girls, and the white T-shirt she wore while painting it. On the shirt she wrote with ballpoint pen: “There is nothing like a comfortable cotton tee shirt. I cut the sleeves off and wear the shirt for one art project. This shirt I wore when I finished painting the 3 flower girls.” Then she signed and dated it, like any artwork.

The shirt is part of Randall’s private collection.

West’s Web presence is not the first time a Nevada killer has been bought and sold. A different murderabilia Web site was selling pictures of Michael Strohmeyer, arrested 10 years ago for raping and murdering a 7-year-old girl in a Primm casino bathroom. When that site’s owner found out in January that the Sun was interested, he threatened to sue the newspaper. Randall isn’t that defensive. He also sells Strohmeyer stuff — he’s got a scrap of prison paper with Strohmeyer’s signature on it that he’ll send you for $3.99. And Randall’s hardly apologetic about his hobby.

“I don’t feel bad for doing it, I don’t feel like I am doing nothing wrong,” he said. “Some people collect baseball cards. I like to collect material from high-profile cases.”

When the Nevada Corrections Department this year examined the site selling Strohmeyer’s stuff, officials determined they couldn’t stop it. Some states have passed “notoriety for profit” laws criminalizing the sale of such collectibles, but Nevada hasn’t. And the original “Son of Sam” law, designed to prevent killers from profiting by selling their stories, was overturned years ago, after the Supreme Court determined it was a violation of free speech protections.

Randall’s been writing West for about two years. In that time, they’ve gotten to know each other, and West has always maintained her innocence. She’s always insisted she didn’t kill her mother. Stuffed her in a garbage can? Sure, not even her attorney denied it. But did she kill her mother? No.

Of course, innocence would reduce the value of West’s work. So Randall, asked if he believes Brookey, has an easy answer: “Naaaa.”

    Critic: ‘Murderabilia’ site a crime

What is thought to be the first Massachusetts-based online shopping mall for twisted murderabilia opened for business this month.

PrisonBoundSerialKillers.com, which urges customers to “stay evil,” is vulgar, shocking and has one national anti-murderabilia crusader asking, “Are you going to allow this kind of low-life capitalist to thrive in your state?

Rep. Peter Koutoujian has a bill pending at the State House which would outlaw for-profit sites like prisonboundserialkillers, com, above, which peddle memorabilia produced by killers behind bars.

The US taste for ghoulish 'murderabilia'

In my novel We Need to Talk About Kevin, the mother of an American school killer anticipates having trouble selling her house. To her surprise, the notorious property is snapped up for far more than it is worth after a bidding war. "Home of mass murderer" made for a far more enticing selling point than a backyard pool.

The plot detail was depressingly accurate. Owing to the absence of any law in Massachusetts that bans profiting from crime, PrisonBoundSerialKillers.com this month begins selling "murderabilia" such as dirt dug from the grave of the man who claimed to be the Boston Strangler. The site joins others, such as murderauction.com, that exploit a legal loophole common to most US states. Aimed primarily at stopping criminals from securing book and film deals that capitalise on the American public's ghoulishness, so-called "Son of Sam" laws do not forbid the sale of trinkets that killers fashion after they've been put away.

In the olden days, convicts made car number plates. Now Lee Malvo, the sniper who terrorised motorways around Washington, DC, whiles away the hours sketching self-portraits that he sells on the web for $30 (£15). The schizophrenic cross-dresser, serial killer and self-proclaimed human-blood drinker Hadden Clark flogs drawings of Bugs Bunny. One collector of these morbid talismans boasts of having commissioned the killer-cannibal John Wayne Gacy to draw a portrait of his own two-year-old son.

You can't blame the perps for their enterprise. It's the demand side of this equation that's deserving of scrutiny. In a sane world, nobody pays $150 for an 8x10 glossy of Mark Chapman praying, signed by John Lennon's killer himself. The superstitious might more sensibly regard these items as hexed. But many Americans are cheerfully oblivious of the distinction between glory and infamy. Indeed, it's telling that the very word "notorious" is so commonly misused in the US that most people think it means "famous".
